Let’s Pretend (For Langston Hughes)

We’ve come so far. No more slavery. No more Jim Crow. We have Oprah.

But let’s pretend we haven’t.

Let’s pretend that we still have the wrongest of wrongs to right,
The most unfair
Most unjust
Most small-minded and cruelest of wrongs
To set right.

And then let’s pretend that we have to
Use all of our weight to stay the course.

Let’s pretend we need as much passion,
Determination,
Strength,
Faith,
Hope,
Solidarity

Just as much as it took
To withstand the water hoses
Or the whips
Or the scorn.

Pretend we have to work that hard
To keep it moving forward.

And maybe we can.
